This two-part course provides Sports and Exercise Medicine physicians and allied health professionals with essential knowledge on the prevention and on-field management of sport-related dental injuries. Topics include oral injury prevention, advances in mouthguard technology, the impact of oral health on athletic performance, emergency management of dental injuries, and building effective collaborations with sports dentists.
Part 1: Prevention of Sport-Related Oral-Facial Injuries and the Effect of Oral Health on Athletic Performance
The prevalence of oral-facial injuries in sports varies depending on the type and level of sport. Various ways to reduce the chance of these injuries from occurring will be discussed.
Technology is rapidly changing in the area of custom mouthguards. You will learn about neuromuscular mouthguards, mouthguards with sensors, and custom-fabricated mouthguards.
Recently, a significant amount of literature has emerged on the impact of oral health on both overall health and athletic performance. As a Team Physician, you will likely be the leader of the Sports Medicine Team, and you may not have a Dentist on your team. You will learn what your athletes should do to maintain proper oral health, enabling them to optimize their performance.
Part 2: On-Field Treatment of Sport-Related Dental Injuries – Help Athletes Return to Play Quickly
Sports and Exercise Medicine Physicians have extensive training to treat sport-related musculoskeletal injuries. However, most non-dental healthcare professionals, including Athletic Therapists and Team Physicians, may not receive training in treating orofacial injuries.
This presentation will highlight how Sports Medicine Physicians should manage dental injuries to minimize missed practice and competition time for their athletes. You will learn how to diagnose specific dental injuries, what basic emergency treatment to provide for dental emergencies, and when to refer the athlete to a dentist or dental specialist. This presentation should better prepare you and make you more comfortable with the on-site treatment of dental injuries.
Team Physicians should ensure that they have a Dentist on their Sports Medicine Team. How to select the right Dentist for your Team who is trained in Sports Dentistry will also be discussed.
