The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999 as an international independent agency to lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport. As the global regulatory body, WADA’s primary role is to develop, harmonize and coordinate anti-doping rules and policies across all sports and countries. Our key activities include: scientific and social science research; education; intelligence & investigations; development of anti-doping capacity; and, monitoring of compliance with the World Anti-Doping Program.

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a highly organized and medically knowledgeable professional to lead and oversee the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) process, including the coordination of the TUE Expert Group. In this role, you will provide medical expertise across various sectors of the Agency and manage the review and revision of the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (ISTUE) as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) process and procedures including regular monitoring and reviews;
  • Manage activities of the WADA TUE Expert group and of an extended group of international medical specialists.
  • Review and analyze data in support of the TUE program
  • Manage the Medical Team to optimize TUE review process by WADA.
  • Create and maintain WADA TUE Physician Guidelines for medical conditions which frequently require the need for TUEs;
  • Assist in briefing experts and lawyers, or if required provide testimony in legal cases.
  • Liaise and engage with medical experts or advisors from governments or agencies where there is interaction between medical and anti-doping concerns;
  • Provide appropriate medical information to Communications/public, as per media policy;
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. medical commissions of sport bodies (IFs and IOC);
  • Engage with and support the Prohibited List Expert Group and Health, Medical and Research Committee as requested; Deliver education to physician groups either via publishing or by presenting and participating in conferences;
  • Maintain knowledge of latest literature in relevant areas of medicine/anti-doping.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 8 to 10 years as a Medical Practitioner;
  • Medical qualifications (MD or equivalent);
  • Demonstrated leadership experience;
  • Proven experience in the field of anti-doping;
  • Extensive research and/or academic teaching background;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of international sport;
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify issues and develop effective, practical solutions;
  • Cultural Intelligence (CQ): The ability to understand, respect, and effectively interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Adaptability: The ability to adjust one’s approach and strategies in response to different cultural contexts and challenges;
  • Active Listening and Communication: Engaging in attentive listening and clear communication to understand and respect diverse perspectives. Cross-functional Coordination: Aligns the efforts of diverse teams and specialties toward a common objective;
  • Ability to work with and leverage volunteer physicians and scientists to maximize their participation and contribution to WADA;
  • Periodic evening and/or weekend work expected;
  • Approximately 10% Travel required;
  • Excellent oral and written skills in one of the two WADA official languages (English/French) and very good command of the other official language. Additional languages would be an asset (e.g. Spanish, German etc.);
