CASEM Essential Joint Injections Workshop

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Determine appropriate clinical indications for musculoskeletal injections by distinguishing scenarios in which injections are beneficial versus potentially harmful.

• Identify contraindications and clinical red flags that should prompt deferral of injection or alternative management.

• Select appropriate injectable agents, including corticosteroids and local anesthetics, and apply basic dosing principles to common sport and exercise medicine conditions.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify relevant surface anatomy and anatomical landmarks for knee, shoulder (glenohumeral and subacromial), and first CMC joint injections.

• Demonstrate correct needle positioning and injection approach for the covered joints based on anatomical principles.

• Incorporate technique pearls discussed during the demonstration to improve accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort during injections.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate proper sterile technique and safe procedural setup during simulated musculoskeletal injections.

• Perform simulated lower extremity, shoulder, and upper extremity joint injections using appropriate needle selection, angles, and approaches.

• Apply pain-reduction strategies and integrate real-time faculty feedback to refine injection technique and procedural confidence.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Recognize common post-injection complications, including flare reactions, infection, and steroid-related hyperglycemia.

• Implement appropriate post-injection management and aftercare instructions to reduce risk and optimize patient outcomes.

• Apply risk management and documentation principles, including CMPA-informed best practices, to injection-related clinical encounters.
